Faye Burlingame* Birthday Cards
Within the studies of early adult hood on it has been shown that adults memory declines in the years to come. Making It difficult to remember certain memories or the little things that once happened. It has also been shown that throughout adult hood, adults do not go through actual milestones or stages such as the younger groups do. Once a person is past their 20’s the mile stones begin to lessen and become less distinct.
In a younger age group such as from birth to 20 years old there tend to be a lot of milestones, like first words, and steps, drivers license, voting at 18 and becoming an adult, college a career. But once you are out of those stages there are not many other major things other than marriage, kids, divorce, and death, the end.
When looking at the birthday cards there are a lot more for the younger age groups, because they are more recognized for every single year. It seems to be more of a big deal to younger kids, and once you get older people wish they didn’t have birthdays. They cards continued up until about 10-12 years of age before they start skipping with specific years. Than they go to 40’s “over the hill” and 60 “holy crap your old” and no one gets cards when they turn 100, that would just be a worthless card company, really how many 100 year old birthday cards would anyone ever need to buy. Card companies just start skipping around the years after they get into the double digits.
Most of the birthday cards are funny (or try to be for that matter) other wise they are very generic in just saying, “Happy Birthday”. The cards try to show that aging is not a bad thing, they try to make humor of it all and lighten the day. There is not much difference in cards, you can get funny or generic. The older people get the less appealing the cards seem to be. They say what needs to be said and that’s about it.
As the readings have said the younger need more appealing, catch eye type things to interested. Older age groups lessen in being able to recall these types of things so it is not such a big deal, I guess people start to grow out of it. As the milestones go, the cards may tend to say something about getting a drivers license, or maybe about finally qualifying for the senior discount at restaurants. Either way the way that the cards are portrayed they do show the differences in them as to aging and how the developmental studies have been somewhat taken into view. They seem to be slacking in the old people department and need to start making them some flashy cards.

What I've Learned/ Poem
When I first started this class I wasn’t sure what to expect. I learned the basics from the first chapter. I knew that a psychologist was classified as a doctor but, I was not quiet sure how the practice came about. I never would have thought that it was so hard to think about think and to analyze a persons thoughts. I can see that in a society like today’s this would be necessary to see why some people do the things that they do. I see this relevant in today in learning how to help people who have mental issues or problems that effect their lives.
After I started learning what it was all about I felt a little more enthused to learn in the chapters to come. I have learned that psychology is a science, and learned about all of the different studies that they may use to analyze an issue. I never would have realized how many different ways you can do experiments for different things and how in depth each one goes. With the different experiments that psychologists have done I would not have guessed that they would use the math technicalities such as mean, median, mode, and range. I have never thought of it to be much of a science before. When they do the studies I never took into play how different aspects can effect it. Such as using different variables and subjects, or the culture, the size, shape, color, of a person.
In the most recent chapter that we have been studying, nature, nurture, I have learned that different aspects in nature and how someone has been raised can effect a lot of how their behavior is. I also have learned a lot about the twin studies in all of the articles I have researched. I always thought that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olson were identical twins, because you can not tell them apart. It blew me away when I read in the book that they are fraternal twins. I understand that twins are a rare thing, and that identical twins are even more rare, but what I do not understand is why they are treated so differently by researchers. When scientist want to do studies on them they are more interested in the identical than the fraternal. I see that it is less common, but not why they are treated so differently. In today the studies may come in helpful to see why the reasons for the different behaviors and just exactly how nature and nurture effect them. This could be helpful when it come to diseases or illnesses so that others can be treated.
Out of everything that we have so far in this class I thought that It was most interesting that people see it so hard to have to think about thinking. I never had thought about how it have ever come about either and that I have realized that it actually does take some work. Seeing that that is what this whole class is about I should be able to get pretty good at it. Thinking about thinking is the most interesting to me, it seems so simple until you actually think about it.
?1- I would like to know when the first signs of the use of psychology were….
?2- When was the first set of twins born and how did they figure out the behavior due to nature nurture?
?:3- Is psychology the same in all cultures?

Poem:
Psych is fun, psych is cool,
I take the class when I’m in school.
It takes hard work and the work is a lot,
And if you don‘t finish you might get shot.
Or maybe not.
